How to Play
BOOM is played like a traditional turn based rougelike. Navigate through each level searching for the stairwell down to the next, scavenging equipment and ammo to survive the demonic onslaught. Move one space or take one action per turn, and enemies will do the same. Interact with objects and attack enemies by bumping into them. Equipped weapons will increase your base attack, and also provide you with a ranged attack that deals even more damage, provided you have the ammo. Find armor to improve your defense, healing items to mend your wounds, and other items to help Boomguy rip & tear his way through 9 levels of Hell on Earth.
Tips:
- Certain enemies posses a ranged attack. These enemies will attack either adjacent to Boomguy or at their specified range. Position yourself carefully
- Some enemies move faster than others, moving more than one space per turn, if able. In contrast, other enemies are slow, and will only move once every other turn
- Keep an eye out for lockers and footlockers to keep yourself equipped
- Empty barrels could contain ammo or health, or maybe another monster
- Rip & Tear!
Dev Notes
BOOM is the next step in my continued learning of game development. Pico-8, LUA, and game dev, in general, was completely new to me 9 months ago. Through following tutorials, scouring the internet and documentation (which I keep a printed copy of in my handy 5 Star notebook), and good old trial and error, I've managed to produce 3 somewhat complete games. HUGE thanks to the Lazy Devs Academy YouTube channel for his comprehensive videos. Krystian not only explains the what, but the how and why too. I just hope I've done his engine justice with my interpretation.
Credits
Nearly full credit needs to go to Krystian Majewski, Lazy Devs Academy for his YouTube tutorial series. BOOM was built following his Porklike tutorial, which everyone should check out on his channel

Music in BOOM was sourced from Pico-8 Tunes Vol 1 & 2 by Gruber. He has some great music tutorials on his channel

I wish I could say I was learning the Pico-8 music editor, but I seem to be terrible at it.
Original pixel art and sound effects are done by myself. If you'd like to download this game as a Pico-8 cart, or try out one of my other "completed" games, you can visit
