The Origin of Pico Panda
I was at a complete loss as to what to attempt for my second attempt at creating a complete game experience after Defender of Coryx XII, so I asked my wife for ideas. She told me she wanted to play a game "with a panda that rolls and eats bamboo". I saw Dylan Bennet's (mboffin.itch.io) short tutorial series on YouTube for an adventure game, and set out to create a world for our panda hero.
The initial framework for the game was completed in a 12 hour marathon session of videos and coding. Several weeks of upgrades and additions followed, adding collectibles, a goal, and enemies (the absolute longest part, and still very sketchy) until I felt like I had a workable game. That was version 0.6. I put the game on the Lexaloffle BBS and got some great feedback and bug reports. Another few weeks making tweaks and sweeping through with the can of coding RAID, and I had version 0.7. The new update was an improvement, but this is where engagement on the forums fell off for my game. Version 0.8 was only slightly better with a few bug fixes and minor updates. After publishing some of my other efforts on itch.io, I was motivated to make some more improvements. So, with version 0.9, The Adventures of Pico Panda is still considered in semi-active development.
